Gastroenterology

Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine that studies and treats diseases related to the digestive system. Gastroenterologists deal with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases occurring in organs such as the stomach, intestines, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. These specialists diagnose diseases by accessing internal organs through imaging methods such as endoscopy and colonoscopy and offer various treatment options. Gastroenterology addresses common problems such as stomach ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, reflux disease, liver cirrhosis, as well as more serious conditions such as cancers of the digestive tract. In this way, gastroenterologists play an important role in maintaining digestive health and managing diseases.

Gastroenterology also strives to raise individuals’ awareness of digestive system problems by providing preventive health services. Patient education about healthy nutrition, supporting digestive health, and reducing risk factors is an important element within the scope of this specialty. Gastroenterologists take a multidisciplinary approach and evaluate various treatment options so that patients can receive an effective and individual response to their digestive system problems.

Endoscopy

Endoscopy, as a medical procedure, is an important diagnostic and therapeutic method that allows direct observation and examination of internal organs. During this procedure, the endoscope, a flexible tube, is inserted into the body, usually through the mouth, providing access to the stomach, intestines, esophagus, bronchi and other internal organs. While endoscopy is used to diagnose various digestive system disorders, it can also be used for therapeutic interventions such as removing polyps, stopping bleeding or taking biopsies. This method offers less discomfort and faster recovery times compared to invasive surgical interventions, providing patients with a more accurate diagnosis and an effective treatment option.

Colonoscopy

The colonoscope, a flexible tube, usually starts in the rectum and travels through the colon, allowing the doctor to directly observe internal organs, take biopsies, or treat abnormalities such as polyps. Colonoscopy is used to screen for bowel cancer, diagnose inflammatory bowel diseases, determine the source of bleeding, and evaluate other bowel problems. This method offers an effective approach to a variety of digestive health-related issues, allowing for more accurate diagnoses with minimal discomfort for patients and a rapid recovery period.

Reflux

Reflux, which is a condition that occurs as a result of stomach contents flowing back into the esophagus, is caused by the damaging backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus and is usually caused by weakness or looseness in the stomach valve. Reflux may manifest itself with symptoms such as heartburn, chest pain, retching, cough and burning in the throat. While lifestyle changes and dietary adjustments may be effective in mild cases, medication or surgical intervention may be required in more severe cases. Reflux, if left untreated, can cause esophageal damage and, in severe cases, lead to complications such as Barrett’s esophagus or esophageal cancer. Therefore, if symptoms persist or become severe, it is important to consult a qualified healthcare professional.

Polypectomy

Polypectomy is the process of removing polyps with colonoscopy.
